Privacy: what I keep, and why
NewfieCards is a small site I run for my family and friends. It isn't a business, and your information is never sold, rented or traded. Not to anybody, not ever. Here is everything the site keeps, in plain words.
Your account
- Username, email and password. So you can sign in. The password is stored scrambled in a way that can't be turned back, so nobody can read it, me included.
- Your profile, if you fill it in: a display name, where you're from, a few lines about yourself, a photo. All optional. Your photo is rebuilt from its pixels when you upload it, so the place a phone photo was taken is never kept. Only signed-in members can see it.
- Your settings: favourite game, sound, house rules, and whether you're shown on the leaderboards.
Getting in
- Asking for an invite. Your name, email, phone number and postal address, so I know who I'm letting in to a site my family uses. Only the people who run the site can see your phone and address. Other players never do, and they're never put in an email.
- Inviting a friend. Your friend's email address and the note you write, so the invite can be sent and so you can take it back.
- To stop the forms being flooded, the site keeps a scrambled code made from your internet address when you ask for an invite or write to us. It can't be turned back into the address.
Playing
- Your games. Who played, who won, the scores and the moves. That's what your profile, your stats, your badges, the leaderboard and Head to head are worked out from.
- Your stats. Other members can see your stats by month, never by day. Your day calendar and streaks are yours alone. Untick Show me on the leaderboards in Settings and your stats page is hidden from other members and you're left off the leaderboards. Your games still count for the people you played with.
- Table chat. Every line typed at a table, who said it, where and when. Nobody reads it unless somebody tells me they were treated badly at a table. Then I can look instead of guessing.
Messages and help
- Messages between members, and the bell's notifications, so they reach you.
- Help chats. What you ask the Help desk and the Game Assistant, and the answers. If you asked for help without signing in, your chat and any email address you gave are deleted 90 days later. A Help desk answer may be reused by the Game Assistant for similar questions, but only after a person has checked it and taken out anything personal.
- Bug reports and Contact messages, so I can answer them and fix things.
- A copy of each email the site sends you, with every link taken out, so I can tell whether an email went.
What there isn't
- No advertising, no analytics, no tracking pixels.
- The only cookies keep you signed in, stop forged forms, and carry a one-line note (such as "Saved") to the next page you open. If you press Help without signing in, one more cookie lets the Help chat find your question again for 30 days.
- The page styles, the icons and a few scripts are loaded from three public code libraries, the same way most websites load them. Those services see that a page was loaded, as any web server does.
- The site's hosting company keeps the server's own logs for a short time, then deletes them.
If you leave
Write to me and I'll disable your account. Your sign-in stops working, you can't be dealt in, and nobody can play as you. I don't delete accounts. The games you played and what you said at the tables stay on record, so nobody can break the rules, leave, and come back with a clean slate. Your phone number and address were only for letting you in: ask and I'll clear them. The Terms page explains this in full.
Questions
Ask anything about your information, or ask me to change or clear something, through the Contact page at the bottom of every page. I'll answer you myself.
