Scat (31) Rules
A fast-paced card game of collecting and swapping
Objective
The goal of Scat is to collect cards of the same suit to reach a hand value as close to 31 as possible. The player with the lowest hand value at the end of a round loses a life.
Card Values
- Aces: 11 points
- Face Cards (K, Q, J): 10 points each
- Number Cards (2-10): Face value
Important: Only cards of the same suit count toward your score!
Gameplay
- Each player is dealt 3 cards
- One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile
- On your turn, you must either:
- Draw the top card from the discard pile, then discard one card
- Draw from the deck, then discard one card
- Knock to end the round
- When a player knocks, everyone else gets one more turn
- The player with the lowest score loses a life
Scoring
Your score is the sum of cards in your hand of the same suit. If you have multiple suits, only the highest-scoring suit counts.
Example: If you have K♠ 9♠ 5♦, your score is 19 (K♠ + 9♠ = 10 + 9 = 19). The 5♦ doesn't count because it's a different suit.
Special case: Three cards of the same rank (like 7♥ 7♦ 7♣) always scores 30.5 points!
Lives and Winning
- Each player starts with 4 lives
- Lose a life when you have the lowest score in a round
- If tied for lowest, all tied players lose a life
- When you lose all lives, you're out
- Last player remaining wins!
Strategy Tips
- Focus on collecting cards of one suit
- High cards (Ace, King, Queen, Jack) are valuable
- Watch what others discard to guess their hands
- Knock when you think you have a better hand than at least one opponent
- Three of a kind (30.5) is almost unbeatable!
